Its central location makes it a convenient base for excursions across the region, while its accessibility via public bus and close drive to Interlaken ensures a seamless journey for visitors.
A Glimpse into Beatenberg’s Rich History
The story of Beatenberg is one steeped in tradition and legend. Named after Saint Beatus, who is said to have sought refuge in the nearby caves, the village has long been a sanctuary for travelers and seekers of peace. According to local lore, Saint Beatus courageously expelled a fearsome dragon that had been terrorizing the locals, bringing safety and tranquility to the region. The Saint Beatus caves, which can still be visited today, remain a fascinating historical site and a key part of Beatenberg’s rich cultural heritage.
With the construction of the road from Interlaken to Beatenberg in 1865, the area blossomed into a popular retreat for those drawn to its unparalleled beauty and serenity. During the Belle Époque period, around the turn of the 20th century, Beatenberg became a favored destination for the European aristocracy. This "beautiful era" brought a wave of optimism, cultural flourishing, and prosperity, attracting affluent visitors who sought the tranquility and grandeur of the Swiss Alps. The village's elegant guesthouses and breathtaking views made it a prime location for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life while indulging in the luxuries of the time.
The History of Ula's Holiday Apartments
Our chalet has a captivating history that mirrors the evolution of Beatenberg itself. Built in 1866 as the Hotel Jungfrau, alongside its neighboring Hotel Des Alpes, these establishments were the second and third guesthouses in Beatenberg—testaments to the early days of tourism in the region. Chosen for its extraordinary location, the site offers direct views of the majestic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks, as well as the shimmering Lake Thun.
Over the decades, our chalet has embraced various roles. In 1945, it became a haven for children displaced by the war, serving as an orphanage. Later, in 1970, it transformed into a boarding school known as the Alpen Internat. Finally, in 1985, the building was lovingly converted into five apartments, which we have meticulously restored to preserve its historical charm while providing modern comforts.
Today, Ula's Holiday Apartments invites you to be part of its enduring story. Stay with us and immerse yourself in the timeless beauty and rich heritage of Beatenberg. On some evenings, you may even hear the soothing tones of the alphorn being played or yodeling practiced across the street—an enchanting experience that perfectly complements the breathtaking views. You will feel like you are in a postcard!
